El futuro de Saab y Trollhattan...
Publicado: Sab May 21, 2005 3:22 pm
Trollhättan to be a niche factory
GM-boss reveals the future of Saab
The car factory in Trollhättan has a life beyond 2010, but the 9-3 and 9-5 Saab models will be made by Opel in Rüsselsheim.
Trollhättan is to become a niche fabric and will manufature convertibles and SUVs for different brands within General Motors.
This was revelad by GM's European director Carl-Peter Forster at a press conference in Gothenburg today.
Carl-Peter Forster also spoke in general terms about the future of Saab within GM, GM will stay with Saab and will make the brand more distinct, more swedish and more Scandinavian, the heritage from Saab aerospace history will also be more visible, but Saab in its turn needs to start making money.
Since General Motors accuired Saab fifteen years ago, the brand has only made profit one year.
- No manufacturer can accept that in the long run, Forster said.
He also addressed earlier problems at the Trollhättan site.
No money
- The current Saab 9-3 was developed jointly with Opel Vectra, but of all the components that were suppose to be the same for the two brands, to reduce costs, hardly none were. They can be nearly the same, but not exactly.
- That Saab could not accept to share parts with Opel increased the development cost by at least 20 procent, money wasted that could have been used to develop new models instead.
- With a more strict financial control in Trollhättan the Combi model of the 9-3 would not have been delayed nearly two years. But now there was no money to start production.
Forster also talked very concrete about the future and future models.
Saab 9-5 will be built in Rüsselsheim
The next generation Saab 9-5 will be built on the same platform as the next generation 9-3 and Opel Vectra. Because of this the car will be built together with the 9-3 and the Vectra at Opels site in Rüsselsheim.
The 9-5 will be front wheel drive, AWD will be an option in conjunction with more powerful engines. The 9-5 will also be larger than now but the 9-3 will be similair as today.
The 9-6X SUV that has been planned with Subaru will be built, despite all rumors of the opposite, and the car will be manufactured by Subaru in the US.
No cooperation with korean developers
- A smaller SUV, the 9-4X, will be developed in the US together with Cadillac. Rumors about a venture with GM's korean automaker Daewoo/Chevrolet are wrong, says Carl-Peter Forster to Aftonbladet.
- It took us five minutes to reject that idea. It would never work to base a premium car for Saab on the brand that manufactures General Motors cheapest cars.
Small production series in Trollhättan
The trollhättan factory has become more effective and more concerned about quality during the last years. Because of this plans are to keep the factory in the future.
- We plan to use the Trollhättan factory to produce niche cars aimed at people with high demands. We are talking small production series, maybe 3, 4 or 5 times 30 000 cars a year. Convertibles, SUVs, etc. or other cars with small production series. Up to five different models in series up to 30 000 cars per year.
At least one of them is to be a Saab, the replacement of todays 9-3 convertible.
