Saab will develop infotainment systems for other General Motors Europe brands.
“It will be Saab’s responsibility to package these systems into future Opels,” said GM Europe President Carl-Peter Forster.
Saab is designing the stereo and navigation systems for the next-generation Opel Corsa small-segment car that will be introduced at the end of next year.
GM Europe managers think Saab excels at packaging its infotainment systems so they are easy to use.
Saab’s Trollhättan, Sweden, plant will take on a greater role within GM Europe in specialist fields where its strengths can benefit other GM brands. Another example is that Saab will help develop certain passive safety systems for GM Europe’s brands, said Forster, who became Saab chairman on April 1.
He said the new strategy for Saab helps free up resources within Opel to create new products
Last month GM Europe said the next-generation Saab 9-3 and Opel Vectra will be built at Opel’s plant in Rüsselsheim, Germany. Production starts in 2008.
Trollhättan, Saab’s main plant, bid for the work but lost.
Aim for the skies
Forster said that Saab has in some respects lost sight of its aeronautical heritage, but that is about to change.
“We will see and feel the aero heritage in the next-generation Saabs,” said Forster at the Geneva auto show last month.
A key feature of future Saabs will be the return of the brand’s once-characteristic wraparound windshield to create a distinct design language for Saab.
Said Forster: “It’s like the canopy of an aircraft.”
Saab began building cars in 1949, 12 years after it was founded as an aircraft manufacturer.
Forster also said front-wheel drive will no longer be a core value for Saab. He said most car buyers don’t care whether a car was front- or rear-wheel drive
saludos
