Cooperation background
Saab leverages GM Global Partner Fuji Heavy Industries to create 9-2X

A cooperation of two companies with similar mindsets

Both partners are devoted to dynamic and individualistic cars

Puts Saab in a position to actively shape the emerging segment for premium small cars
The new Saab 9-2X is the result of a cooperation between Saab Automobile AB and General Motor’s global partner, Fuji Heavy Industries (FHI). GM owns Saab and holds a 20 percent stake in FHI. The Saab 9-2X program allows both companies to reach their goals by jointly leveraging the global resources of the GM Group.

“Our role at GM is to help enable Saab to grow its product range,” stated Bob Lutz, GM’s Vice Chairman for Product Development. “So, when Saab requested to work with FHI, we were very supportive as the Saab and Subaru working relationship is a very natural one.”

Sharing a heritage of aircraft manufacturing before entering the automobile business, both companies have a successful history in rallying and are renowned for their unconventional thinking. In addition, both brands look back on a rich history in technical innovations and have a solid reputation for producing dynamic cars with a distinctive character. Furthermore, Saab is a center of expertise within General Motors for the development of turbocharged gasoline engines, a technology also intensively and successfully used by FHI.

The joint effort that produced the new Saab 9-2X has all the ingredients of a classical win/win situation. Continuing with its biggest product offensive ever, Saab broadens its model line-up with a dynamic offering that will attract new, younger customers and grow the brand in North America. At the same time it puts Saab in a position to actively shape an emerging hot new market segment as the Saab 9-2X will be one of the first premium sports compacts on the American market. The Swedish manufacturer also gains insights into the all-wheel-drive experience from FHI, the eminent leader of on-road all-wheel-drive technology.

FHI maximizes its architecture and manufacturing capacity utilization. Additionally, as partner in the development process of the 9-2X, it gained first hand knowledge of Saab’s design and brand management expertise.

“This global joint effort so far has run exceedingly well,” said Saab President and CEO Peter Augustsson. “Leveraging the resources within General Motors truly is a competitive advantage, as we were able to be one of the first entries in the emerging premium small car segment.”

Positioning and functionality
With 9-2X, Saab expands portfolio to three product lines

Early entry in emerging premium sport compact segment
For many buyers, Saab 9-2X will be first car from premium brand
Start of sales is scheduled for July 2004
The new Saab 9-2X is the next significant step in the biggest product development program in Saab’s history. With standard all-wheel-drive, powerful engines, and a distinctive European – as well as versatile 5-door body style – it is a unique offering in a developing new niche in the car market. This new segment is expected to significantly grow in the next years. The Saab 9-2X will also generate considerable additional growth for the Saab brand – the fastest growing European premium car brand in the American market today. The Saab 9-2X is scheduled to go on sale in the USA and Canada, with other markets still under consideration.

With cars reaching dealer showrooms by July 2004, the Saab 9-2X is an early entry in a car segment just emerging on the American market: The premium sport compact segment. Other entries expected by industry observers include Audi A3, BMW 1-series and Volvo V50.

“In general, we expect the 9-2X to attract the same type of customers we’ve traditionally had – active individualists, who want a fun to drive vehicle that is a bit unconventional,” says Chip Wilkerson, Brand Manager Future Vehicles. “However, since the price point of this car is lower, the Saab 9-2X will be accessible to a younger demographic. This combined with all-wheel-drive represents a tremendous opportunity for us.”

Customer surveys show that up to 40 percent of all Americans are looking for all-wheel-drive in their next vehicle – a feature standard in all Saab 9-2X.

With prices starting under $25,000, the Saab 9-2X will be the first premium brand vehicle for many of its customers. With this vehicle, Saab expects to attract customers, in their early stages of their career, who are cosmopolitan and open-minded, and who appreciate the sophisticated style of a European brand.

Current owners of the former Saab 900/9-3 range are another target group. “With our new 9-3 Sports Sedan we have successfully moved up-market. The 9-2X and especially the top-of-the-line 9-2X Aero will fill the vacated spot. The new car line will attract to our loyal owners, especially those who are used to the versatility of a 5-door body style” explains Wilkerson.

High versatility and good economy
Saab 9-2X customers will lead an active lifestyle and, therefore, need a vehicle that enables them to carry passengers — and their sports gear. With a wheelbase of 99.4 inches (2,525 mm) and an overall length of 175.6 inches (4,460 mm) the Saab 9-2X offers nimble handling about town and on backcountry roads. Yet it holds up to 27.9 cubic feet (790 dm3) of cargo space with the seatback up and 61.6 cubic feet (1,744 dm3) with the seatback folded down. A 60/40-split fold-down rear seatback is standard in all 9-2X models and the large rear luggage door opening gives optimal access to the trunk space provided. Weighing in at just under 3,100 pounds (1,400 kilos), all 9-2X versions return excellent highway mileage anticipated to be in the 26 to 28 mpg range – yet with their standard all-wheel-drive they can safely tow up to 2,000 pounds (900 kilos).

Comprehensive safety equipment package
Based on a robust and rigid body design, the Saab 9-2X range offers a long list of standard safety equipment. The front and rear of the body are designed as energy absorbing impact zones with multiple load paths. The framework around the passenger cabin is strengthened to help resist deformation. The door-beams and the reinforced B-pillar are designed to help resist the incoming crash forces resulting from certain side impact collisions.

The Saab 9-2X is equipped with 3-point seatbelts on all five seating positions. In order to further increase the front seatbelts’ efficiency, there are pre-tensioners that tighten the seatbelts in a collision. Load limiters then release the pressure of the belt so as to reduce the forces on the front seat occupants’ bodies.

Driver and passenger front airbags help to provide protection in frontal impacts. In the front seats there are also head-thorax side airbags mounted in the backrests. The side airbags are designed to help protect the thorax and the head in a side impact.

The front seats in the Saab 9-2X are fitted with active head restraints designed to help reduce the risk of neck injury in the event of a rear end collision.

Long list of standard comfort features
The standard equipment level of the Saab 9-2X leaves little to be desired with all features executed to the brand’s renowned premium standard. Standard equipment in all 9-2X models includes:

16 x 6.5-inch alloy wheels with 205/55 R16 all-season tires

AM/FM/CD stereo system

Climate control system

Cruise control

Height-adjustable driver’s seat (pump lever type)

60/40 split fold-down rear seat back

Power windows with driver’s one-touch auto down

Electric power sideview mirrors

Rear window wiper/washer with rear wiper de-icer as option

Variable intermittent windshield wipers with wiper de-icer

Dual overhead map lights

On top of that, the Saab 9-2X Aero distinguishes itself with

Larger brake discs front (16’’ vented)

Hood sculptured air intake

Sport exhaust tail pipe

Front fog lamps

Special light alloy wheel (17’’ with tires 215/45 R17 as an option)

Semi-automatic climate control system

6-disc in-dash CD changer

Leather wrapped shifter knob and handbrake handle.

Leather wrapped three spoke sport steering wheel

Metal rimmed instrument dials

Strong contrasting textile trim material.

Peter Augustsson, Saab Automobile’s President and CEO, puts the launch of the Saab 9-2X in broader perspective: “The Saab 9-2X is a milestone in expanding our model range and our customer base, especially in the all-important American market. For the first time ever, Saab will offer more than two car lines. Additionally, it is quite exciting for us to be able to expand our model range by adding an entry level offer in this newly emerging segment.”

With the loyal following of its luxury Saab 9-5 line, the enthusiastic reception of the sporty new Saab 9-3 Sedan and Convertible and with additional new products to come in the next 18 months, Saab is prepared to continue to grow at this historical pace.

Sporty, driver focused performance
Saab 9-2X: A Premium Sport Compact Built for Driving

Formula for success: Dynamic design, fun-to-drive, and 5-door versatility

All models with advanced full-time all-wheel-drive for dynamic driving experience

Chassis tuning gives fine balance of agility, comfort, and stability
Saab enters the emerging segment for premium sport compacts with a distinctive model tailored for young driving enthusiasts that pursue an active lifestyle. Technical features include boxer four cylinder engines and advanced full-time all-wheel-drive (AWD), a first in Saab’s history. With AWD, the ample power available in both engine versions is delivered to the road with less friction loss, improving the vehicle performance under acceleration. It also provides additional traction under difficult road conditions.

All Saab 9-2X have disc brakes at all four wheels and a latest generation 4-channel/4-sensor anti-lock brake system (ABS). Four-wheel independent suspension features a MacPherson strut layout, with lower wishbones in front and three links at the rear. Stabilizer bars are standard fore and aft.

The power plant of the Saab 9-2X Linear is naturally aspirated and delivers 165 hp @ 5,600 rpm as well as a maximum torque of 166 lb.-ft. (225 Nm) @ 4,000 rpm. The 9-2X Aero offers a turbocharged and intercooled two-liter high performance DOHC engine delivering 227 hp @ 6,000 rpm and 217 lb.-ft. (294 Nm) of torque @ 4,000 rpm. Beyond the permanent AWD, traction and handling performance of the Aero is further improved by a viscous limited-slip differential at the rear. Both engines come with a standard 5-speed manual transmission; a 4-speed automatic transmission with lockup torque converter is available as an option.

With its outstanding performance, leaping for example through the standard sprint from 0 to 60 mph in just over six seconds, the 9-2X Aero will find its customers among car enthusiasts. Young at heart, they will appreciate the Aero’s outstanding dynamic capabilities wrapped in a premium package that offers excellent versatility. The 9-2X Linear, with its highly accessible price, is an appealing proposition for first time premium buyers.

Unique boxer layout is ideal for permanent all-wheel-drive
The base for the 9-2X’s sharp handling response and smooth ride is provided by a very stiff body structure incorporating a hydroformed front subframe and tailored blank-welded side sills and B-pillars.

The boxer engine layout is ideal for an all-wheel-drive application because it allows the transmission to be mounted directly behind it. Power travels in a straight, near-horizontal line to the rear differential, minimizing frictional loss. This symmetrical, uniform layout also provides excellent left-right balance. In contrast, an all-wheel-drive system in a vehicle with a transverse (sideways) mounted engine requires additional components to reroute the power from transverse to longitudinal orientation. Such a system adds friction (power loss) and weight.

The boxer layout also concentrates the engine’s mass in a small area and helps provide a lower center of gravity, contributing to quick handling and steering response. The horizontally opposed layout results in an inherently smooth-running engine, as well, because the motions of the pistons from one cylinder bank (and the vibration the motion creates) cancel the vibrations of the opposing bank. Furthermore, aluminum-alloy construction of the engine and transmission results in a lightweight drivetrain.

Chassis tuned to give dynamic responses, a subtle ride and high level of stability
“The 9-2X has all the ingredients to fulfill our brand promise of delivering sporty, driver focused performance,” says Kjell-Åke Eriksson, the Executive Director responsible for the Saab 9-2X model line. “Even though it is tuned much different than other Saab’s, as it is defined to have a bit more aggressive driving characteristics, it is still completely in line with our unique Saab philosophy.” This philosophy is defined by high straight-line stability for relaxed long-distance driving, outstanding on-limit stability and predictability even when the car is fully laden, and a subtle ride, minimizing harshness and impact of rough roads.

In tuning the chassis, Saab’s engineering team under the direction of Platform-Manager Peter Dörrich started from the ground up: “We commissioned Bridgestone with the development of new tires. To reduce unsprung weight, we decided to only specify light alloy wheels in a 16 inch format with 205/55 R16 tires for all models.” Aero models are also available with 17-inch wheels, using 215/45 R 17 tires. To further minimize mass in the suspension system, front wheel wishbones are manufactured from aluminium instead of steel.

Intensive work went into tuning the shock absorbers. Per Jansson, Chassis Vehicle Integration Engineer, explains: “Our main concern was to combine very good body control for sporty performance with low harshness for comfortable everyday driving.” The wheel angle settings and chassis geometry are defined to provide excellent predictability and stability in critical situations, as well as a high level of straight line stability. The same objectives determined the configuration of the rear bump stops and the rubber bushings of the wishbone joints.

For the 9-2X Aero, additional attention was paid to the steering system. The steering gear mounting is designed to provide superior steering precision and response, as is the gear ratio.

Peter Dörrich sums it up: “Overall, the Saab 9-2X is an outstanding performer on the road. With crisp handling, more than adequate ride comfort and a high safety margin in critical situations, it is a delight to drive.”
